Today, on the first-ever World Wildlife Day, I see both good and bad news for African elephants.
Save the Elephants reported on its Facebook page that influential Chinese business leaders are saying no to ivory. According to WildlifeExtra.com, more than 30 business leaders in China have taken a public stand against the ivory trade by signing a pledge to never purchase, possess, or give ivory as a gift.
Sadly, the bad news continues, too. Recently (as you can read on TRAFFIC’s website), a Ugandan court ordered the release of 832 individual ivory pieces for export—fueling the ongoing market that is responsible for the death of tens of thousands of elephants every year.
